House for a sculptor

The main emphasis of this architecture project is the meticulous restoration and expansion of a 19th-century wood structure, previously utilized as a dairy barn, into a remarkable space housing multiple sculpture and painting studios. The project achieves a doubling of the existing square footage, resulting in a versatile layout that accommodates the needs of artists. One of the key aspects of the renovation involves the straightening of the entire building structure, which has stood for over a hundred and fifty years. This meticulous process ensures the stability and longevity of the transformed space. An essential element of the project is the incorporation of the original wood planks from the barn's facade. These reclaimed planks are thoughtfully reused throughout the renovation, most notably in the creation of the new facade. This approach not only pays homage to the barn's rich history but also adds a touch of authenticity and character to the revitalized space. The studios themselves are designed to optimize artistic expression. With a focus on northern light exposure, they provide an ideal environment for painting and sculpting, allowing artists to harness the natural illumination necessary for their creative processes. In contrast, the living quarters are strategically oriented to face the south, ensuring a comfortable and well-lit living space for the artists. An architectural feature of the project is the floating bridge that connects the two bedrooms on the third floor, promoting fluidity and connectivity within the space. Additionally, the first floor houses two apartments, offering versatile accommodation options for artists and their guests. Outdoor living is seamlessly integrated into the project with a spacious deck that extends the living areas by over two thousand square feet. This expansive outdoor space provides a serene environment for relaxation, inspiration, and artistic contemplation.
